Part of the Brasshaven series, book 1
An archivist. A Tinkerer. A machine that was never meant to take them anywhere.
Ambrose Cardwold left the comfort of his family’s name behind because he wanted to build something of his own. Now an archivist with a stubborn respect for order and scholarship, he believes the Outer Reach deserves better than the Inner Reach has given it. His first assignment there is his chance to see it for himself.
It doesn’t go the way he pictured.
Mostly because of Redmond “Redd” Gorwick.
Redd is a Tinkerer with a revolutionary invention: a device that can send an object from one place to another in a single step. It’s only a proof of concept, but it’s his entry for the Turning Fair, the first time Inner and Outer Reach inventions will stand side by side.
Teleportation has always been available to anyone in Brasshaven with enough magic to use it.
If Redd’s machine works, magic won’t matter.
Ambrose thinks the machine is reckless. Redd thinks Ambrose is an arrogant prick.
Then the machine does something it was never built to do. It takes them both and drops them somewhere no map of Brasshaven shows: a pocket of space folded away from the world.
They make it back. The sensible thing would be never to go again.
Neither of them is feeling sensible.
Forced to work together, Ambrose and Redd return to the pocket, and every trip exposes another impossibility, another question neither can answer, and another reason they may have been wrong about each other.
Whatever is hidden there could change what magic means for everyone in Brasshaven. And the only thing harder to explain than the pocket is why Ambrose and Redd keep finding reasons to go back together.
